Well, I had been planning to join a start-up after the break, I had taken a break to take care of my 8 months old daughter. I shortlisted about 3 to 4 startups. The most receptive of all was Test Insane. By the way I called up a phone number mentioned on the website of Test Insane & decided to talk to someone inside the organization, the call was picked up by Santhosh Tuppad & I was amazed to talk to him from the start.

Santhosh Tuppad said, let’s meet at the coffee day & see if we can relate to each other in relevant terms. As the time passed by during the conversation (say like 2 hours or more), we were inching towards the closure of working together of not building a business empire & generating millions of revenue, but being happy in what we love to do. The conversation of course; was never that of an interview sort but on a front where we could find mutual areas of interest in achieving small goals not by creating pressure/friction, but doing things very passionately.

My experience as Head of Sales is awesome & have been able to balance professional & personal life perfectly. In fact, I need to be more thankful to Santhosh Tuppad who has created the kind of culture (not work culture) to deliver 100% when you are delivering and do not do anything when 99% fit. We never feel we are at a workplace & we do not look at time like which week of the day it is while we start to office. That’s culture (not work culture) again. We have never a lost a deal because of pricing till date & technically qualified throughout the bids we participated. I hope by god’s grace and efforts we move a forward and be happy like we are today! At the end of the day if you are not happy at workplace, you should not be working there anymore. Because you spend 30% to 40% of the lifetime before retiring from work at the workplace and definitely will show in a catastrophic way in your personal life and will kill your potential.

The gradient seems enormous in terms of learning to accelerate a start-up. The moment we were declared as the testing start-up of 2015, we started more aggressively selling our testing services. The way of approach has a lot to do with results of individuals and organizations. To be honest, it has been overwhelming to me since the time I have joined TestInsane. There were many times when we could not serve the customers. And that’s not for lack of skills, but for time constraints with multiple projects and we were happy with the decisions we made (We believe that whatever we do is out of happiness factor).

I was working for couple of MNC’s that help me grow as true sales individual and I feel honoured to be up there in MNC’s, but TestInsane’s DNA/perspective lives in the fact the motivation has to be from within, typically reaching out to CEO, getting things delivered in a nimble way and decision making was real fast with respect to any deals. The time given to understand a business model, derive a new business model & delivery business in a way is truly appreciated. Test Insane is one place I remember you can reach out to anyone at any time and say, “I need to catch up right now to discuss and is well accepted with the culture”. Many people drive business and be happy, but here we derive happiness and drive business which is a unique kind of culture. Till date, we have never lost any deal by being too expensive to the customer; which we many a times state to the customer — You quote, You win. Every time a customer has asked for price quote we have given the customer options that would suit their estimates. We always told the customer we believe in a philosophy — You grow, we grow. Else there is no fun in business. The kind of flexibility you need here is overflowing in the culture & join us if you need to achieve great things by being happy.

People ask us, why your pricing is less? And our answer has been, we admit that we want to make money, however; that’s not in the top priority. More or less are relative words and something that is less to the whole world and be more for us and we are happy with it. People at our start-up are all hard core techies. These are the people who chose computers over others because they found the LOVE for computers. From knowing “How web works?” to “How keyboard works? or How servers / databases work?” our test team rocks the work. What makes us special is, technical skills which is our top priority at work. People usually say, “Attitude first and skill-set next”; somehow, we love to say this, “Skill-set first and everything else next”. By saying this, we are not compromising over attitude, but emphasizing on how much we care for technical skills which are important for a software tester or any technology maniac or a geek.


Now, these are not the developers who were trained on some tool and were called as “Developers in Test”. We have a unique or a different definition from the world and here it goes, “These are the hard-core developers who work on building applications and they are also involved in writing code for check automation which could be in Selenium or Ranorex or Windows autoit. Automation is about writing code, well developers write code. Look at how we bridge the gap and allow people to do what they love to instead of forcing someone into something else which we hate!


At Test Insane, testing style  is exploratory and our testers understand what it means to be an exploratory tester (Yes, its mind-set and skill-set). We practice testing consistently and we believe that anything that we practice, we become good at it. We are not typical testers you may find in any other part of the world in most of the companies, but we are insane as in crazy, passionate about what we do. And not to forget that, testers here rock every session when they are on SBTM (Session based test management) activity. We would like to say this, it’s not a question about jazzy things, it’s not a question about how many bugs we find, it’s not a question about skills; but value. And we want to do everything and anything for our customers to add immense value to their business.


We have dart board, remote controlled helicopter, board games and what not! Well, we wanted to focus on learning culture instead of fun culture. Wait! Learning is FUN for us and it’s still fun culture at Test Insane. We invest in the learning, making money is so boring if we don’t invest it back in the learning of our people. We make sure we have a budget for learning activity. It could be books, or subscription from PluralSight to learn something important which helps us to test better or buying a software license and so on. So, what takes us high? Technically speaking, its alcohol; and our alcohol is learning!

In our experience, we have seen that whenever there is a hiring people give more value to attitude and then skills. They believe that, skills can be mastered with attitude. Yes, we believe that; but somehow our hearts beat for skill-set first and attitude next. At TestInsane we value skill-set over attitude.
